Abstract
This study examines the process of knowledge acquisition through informal learning for sustainable job creation and economic returns, and what lessons can be learnt towards addressing issues of unemployment in South Africa. It is a qualitative study using an interpretative approach, using in-depth face-to-face interviews with a selected sample of 15 participants. Participants included informal builders, hairdressers and mechanics living in the city of Durban and its surroundings, mainly from the informal settlements of Durban. Participants were informally employed individuals with first-hand experience of informal learning. The findings show that the participants had been taught by a friend or relative and some had acquired skills while working for an established business as manual workers. It was evident that these participants had solid practical skills with many years of experience, and some worked for reputable formal established businesses. Most participants were self-employed using skills acquired informally. The value of informal learning for sustainable job creation and economic returns was evident. The findings of the study show that there are lessons to be learnt towards addressing issues of unemployment in South Africa. However, the findings also show that while informal learning is useful, there was an apparent lack of necessary skills such has bookkeeping, business management, writing and reading skills. These deficiencies pose challenges to the sustainability of informal employment. This suggests that while informal learning is essential to close knowledge gaps and create job opportunities, there is also a need to provide necessary support if unemployment and poverty are to be eradicated in South Africa.
