The Latent Structure of Fluid Intelligence: A Factor Analytic Investigation of Attentional Control, Speed of Information Processing, and Working Memory

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate attentional control, information processing speed, working memory capacity, and fluid intelligence among 62 Saudi Arabian university students using a battery of cognitive tasks. Significant positive correlations, ranging from .22 to .41, were observed between performance on specific cognitive tasks and fluid intelligence. These findings are consistent with the general factor model of intelligence, as all variables demonstrated substantial loadings on a single factor accounting for 52.6% of the variance in task performance. The significance of this study lies in its status as one of the rare investigations that have attempted to validate the general factor hypothesis within Arab samples.
