Abstract
Anhedonia is defined as a reduced interest and pleasure in normally rewarding activities and is considered a core symptom of depression. The aim of this study was to develop the Farsi version of the Anhedonia Scale for Adolescents (ASA) and to investigate its psychometric properties (internal consistency, factor structure, convergent and discriminant validities) in an Iranian sample. Data were from a sample of 897 Iranian adolescents (11–18 years old) recruited using online advertisements. Respondents completed the ASA, the Behavioural Activation System (BAS) Scale, the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), and the Positive Affect Scale (PANAS-P). To determine the validity of the collected data, heuristic factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used. The results of the exploratory factor analysis of the scale revealed three factors with eigenvalues greater than one, explaining 66.3 % of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis indices also indicated a good fit for the three-factor model of this scale. Cronbach’s alpha and three-weeks test-retest reliabilities were 0.77, indicating acceptable reliability for the scale. The ASA significantly correlated with the BAS, the SHAPS, and the PANAS-P scales. These findings provide support for the reliability and validity of the ASA. Results confirm the suitability of the ASA as a good self-assessment scale by researchers and clinicians for assessing anhedonia in Iranian adolescents.
