Abstract

This is a historiographical inquiry showing that Western civilization originated the writing of history, produced the greatest historical studies. As it experienced development or actual novelties in knowledge, institutions, and technologies, it developed the idea of progress under the influence of Christianity, and eventually modern liberalism and science. The liberal progressivism that underpinned the West’s writing of history would eventually culminate in a multicultural conception calling for the denunciation of the “prejudicial” claim that Westerners developed the writing of history, and the promotion of the idea that the West was founded by immigrants. Keywords: Historiography, Western civilization, Multiculturalism, Idea of progress, Liberal progressivism
